Our Story
Joey’s café has operated within the Lake District since 2014 and consists of a plant based bakery and café located at Wray Castle, a cafe at Claife Viewing Station and 3 mobile units (one of which spends the season at Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s house).
The Joey’s journey started after owner and Managing Director, Joe Beaumont, fell 40m in a climbing accident in 2011, breaking all the bones on the right side of his body. In his own words he was ‘disabled but extremely motivated’ and so, from here, Joey’s Café was born. The first ‘Cabin’ was built from reclaimed timber and it has a feeling of an old log cabin, an ole timey railway truck and a German Bauwagen all put together! Joe’s enthusiasm, passion and wit runs through the entire business and his drive and focus since has allowed the business to grow to include two cafes and two more cabins. The Joey’s team consists of like-minded people with all staff wanting to create a fun, unique and memorable experience for all customers.
In 2020, after securing the license at Hill Top for the past couple of years, Joe took on the lease for Wray Castle and Claife to secure a trifecta of cafes with the National Trust. In the middle of a pandemic, Joe created and built a plant based bakery in a castle of all places. Wray Castle then became Joey’s HQ, delivering food to the other cafes and providing a stable, creative base for the company.
Joey’s Café specialises in serving fresh, locally roasted coffee and our menu celebrates local, hearty, sustainable food. We believe in creating a unique vibe, bringing the warmth of our personality through everything we do. We pride ourselves on our strong belief in supporting local businesses such as Lakes Brew Co. and Fell Brewery as a well as only using high quality, Fairtrade ingredients supporting our environmental impact goals.
Joe once said ‘the breaking of me was the making of me’ and with the support of the team around him, Joey’s continues to thrive in the Lake District ensuring that the hard work Joe has undertaken continues to inspire those around him.
